The adverse impact of the 10,000 hour rule

Do you know you can become really good at doing something the wrong way? The 10,000 rule was popularized by Malcolm Gladwell and simply states that lots of deliberate practice can make an expert at doing just about anything. While the 10,000 rule does not always work in all circumstances for variety of reasons, there are instances it actually works in reverse. Take for instance the small business owner, who is good at their craft but stinks at running their business. Years of having a badly run business becomes a habit and the small business owner becomes used to their dysfunctional set up.

There are always better ways to do things and unless you stretch your neck out to see, the rest of the world could be passing you by. By the time you realize this, profits in your business could have eroded. Don’t run your business with your head stuck in the sand. If you are stressed in your business, it’s a good sign something needs to be done differently. Reach out for help before profits erode!
